A recent study came to the alarming conclusion that all red meat is bad for you—as in, any amount, any kind, will increase your risk of dying. The study conducted over 20 years, found that eating just three ounces of meat a day increases your risk of dying by 13 percent—and that number increases to 20 percent if that meat is processed, like hot dogs or bacon. But this isn’t the first time meat-lovers have been warned—from ubiquitous pink slime to lax regulation, The Daily Beast rounds up seven arguments against being a carnivore.
Cancer, Heart Disease, Diabetes Anyone with high cholesterol knows to stay away from red meat. Swapping out red meat with another protein source such as nuts can lower your risk of heart disease by up to 30 percent. But red meat is also linked to cancer, especially to colorectal cancer, and todiabetes.
Pink Slime If you need an image to convince you to stay away from meat, you couldn’t do better than that of pink slime. According to Gerald Zirnstein, a former Department of Agriculture scientist, 70 percent of ground beef sold in supermarkets contain pink slime, a goo made out of waste trimmings previously reserved for dog food and cooking oil. Ground beef containing pink slime doesn’t need to be labelled, thanks to a ruling by a USDA official who later stepped down and immediately joined the board of Beef Products Inc.
Antibiotics, Steroids About 80 percent of the antibiotics sold in the United States go to livestock, which need them to stay alive in cramped and overcrowded industrial farms. To make them grow faster, they’re often given hormones which have been linked to cancer. It’s unclear what effect eating antibiotic-filled meat has on humans, but the federal government is concerned that the widespread use of drugs is breeding antibiotic-resistant superbugs and has slowly begun to restrict them.
Chemicals, Pesticides, Heavy Metals Cholesterol and antibiotics are supposed to be in the meat, but what about the stuff that isn’t? The United States’ standards for testing meat for pesticides and chemicals arenotoriously lax. In 2008, Mexico turned back a shipment of American beef because it didn’t meet the country’s standards for copper traces, and in 2010 the Department of Agriculture’s Inspector General condemned the U.S. for allowing meat containing pesticides, heavy metals, veterinary drugs, and other chemicals to reach supermarket shelves.
Salmonella, e. Coli, Mad Cow Hardly a month goes by without news of a meat recall due to bacteria. There’s e. Coli, which comes from contaminated and undercooked beef and pork and which results in diarrhea, cramps, and occasionally kidney failure.Salmonella, another frequent culprit, results in vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. Mad Cow, while rare, is far more frightening. A pathonogenic protein slowly devours the brains of infected cattle—and of humans who eat them. It’s believed to have originated by feeding cattle the remains of other cattle.
The Environment Livestock do more damage to the environment than automobiles, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, which called the industry “one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems on every scale.” Livestock degrade land, contribute to climate change, pollute water, and destroy biodiversity. Cattle rank up there with automobiles and power plants in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. Globally, livestock—mostly cattle—account for 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.
Inhumane treatment The horrors of factory farming are well documented, from crates where pigs don’t have space to turn around to calves restrained to produce veal. Some of the most egregious practices are being phased out after state-level action, but national regulation remains lax.

Day 3: No Chocolate just exercise

Mmmm, breakfast… what to have? Strawberry Slimfast (but not using it to slimfast just tastes nice and couldn’t get chocolate) Belvita breakfast biscuits - they taste almost sweet but good for your fibre intake… and a banana because well it has to be good for you doesn’t it.

I learnt that a glass of milk has the same amount of potassium as in 42 bananas!! Not that I’m ever going to eat 42 bananas in a week let alone a day, I think I’ll stick to the milk.

Will munch brekkie and then head off to the gym. Major fat burning going on :) *major fat!!!

Gym was a bit intense today.. I love working out to Dubstep, mainly skrillex and borgore just for the bass drop. Linkin Park when I’m running cause the intensity is just what I need and then some New Age for when I’m relaxing and cooling down.

I love watching the really hardcore fitties with their towels and power drinks, even though it makes me feel a bit guilty that I’m not that hardcore! It makes me laugh even more when I see the old ladies walking at 1mph on the treadmill and then do about 5 pulls on the weight machine at 5 kg - that definitely makes me feel better.

Measured my BMI today at 22.3 - average is 18.5 - 25 - so am firmly in the middle.

My body fat percentile is 27.1% which is good (def not good to think over a quarter of your body is fat is rather scary - and I still get cold so that needs to go down)

My weight is 8st 9lbs / 55kg which is within the ideal weight so I guess I’m doing fine just need to keep at this and will reach my target goal of 8st 2lbs

Fitness Diary: 7am workout

Oh my days. Waking up early has never been a problem for me. I was asked to work extra due to the lack of staffing today but I really wanted to get a work out in this week as I’m off on holiday in a weeks time. so stupidly enough I thought I’ll go before work.

Staggered out of bed at about 6:30am and got my stuff together, making sure I didn’t forget my towel for the shower. That would have been awkward. Rolled int the car and got to the gym for just before 7am.

Man, there are some right fitness fanatics at my gym. But they all seemed to be old and slightly overweight, so maybe they wanted to work out when nobody would have been watching them. LOL!

Anyway, the doors opened and I walked into the fresh smell of chlorine and an empty changing room. Score. The gym was fairly quiet with around a dozen people milling around on various machines and mats. No one was around to really disturb me so I got on with my usual routine of Cross Trainer (20mins) then stretching (10mins) a selection of weights alternating between legs and arms/shoulders (about 30mins) and then either or both rowing (5mins) and Treadmill (10mins).

The awkward moment when your powering through on the treadmill and some nice old lady comes and asks you to help her on a machine. Eek! As it was so early, there are very few instructors or general staff around, so being the kind person I am, I went and helped her. (Even though I’d never been on the machine she wanted to go on - some sort of posture wobbly platform thing).

It turns out she thought I was an instructor, so that in mind I felt quite flattered and didn’t mind helping her. Kindness is a small thing and I do believe you get good karma if you send out good vibes.

The early morning felt rough. I won’t lie, I did almost consider not going. However, I felt really good afterwards through this fresh burst of endorphins. I would definitely go again early morning before work as it really did set me up for the day. All in all a very good Tuesday. Kisses.x

Fitness Diary Update

Ok. So I had a tiny blip having recently just got back from a family holiday in Saundersfoot, Tenby, South Wales. Eating out almost every other night does not help when one is trying to stay in shape. Having three course meals wasn’t a good idea either. Oops.

I do feel a little ashamed having made such a good first month. The beach body for my holiday to Newquay was pretty epic and I was proud of the progress I made. The good thing is staying that extra week as after the four days of hard drinking, no sleep and minimal eating wasn’t the best idea, I felt grim. I started to get really tired and my skin suffered a bit from all the alcohol consumption. Plus, not sleeping and the lack of proper exercise in the first week took its toll on me. So, after we packed up the caravan, cleaned the jagerbomb off everything, I said my goodbyes to my friends and was finally able to relax and get back into a sort of normality.

Thanks to the routine of my ever quirky beau, I was up at around 6am and in the gym around half past. Yes boys and girls, 6am. Hardcore but what you do when you’re in love eh. A quick work out, stretching and some yoga to set you up for the day. Perfection. As I mentioned in an earlier blog, I don’t mind being up that early - maybe due to the hot and sweaty muscled man I have working out next to me. Bonus!

Having the motivation to do something is primarily down to your own ability to say to yourself “get out of bed you fatty” - the better thing is having someone pushing you out of bed calling you ‘fatty’, which usually gets you up in the morning and feeling sorry for yourself. My friend Jon had that problem and without me waking him up at 9am in the morning, he suffered a lapse similar to mine. Lesson - It’s better to spot each other.

Back in Birmingham, I’ve been primarily working on lower core strength and toning, that means bums legs and abs. Stomach crunches are essential so anything that gets your middle area sore and screaming at you. Weights wise I’m knocking up 65kg on my legs - going to be a monster, grrrr! My arms and chest I’m purely looking to tone so I’m doing about 15kg on light weight machines. I don’t want to get like those scary women who look like they’d pull you leg off and eat it in front of you. No thanks.

With regards to the diet, although I would hardly call it a diet as it’s such a cliched word, more healthy eating, is firmly set in place. My dad is trying to severely loose his years build up of a belly by doing a particularly drastic diet, which I won’t want to include as it may give some fitness diet freak tips, and I’ve told my mum to assist him in this. Me, I’ve limited my intake of carbohydrates, so minimal potatoes but instead small amounts of pasta and rice. No bread unless with soup or maybe one bacon sandwich (can”t resist no matter how much I try, anyone who can please tell me how - no vegetarians wanted, thanks) and then minimal red meat and sugar. The one thing I’ve been told a lot is to stop or limit the amount of sugar I eat so no biscuits, sniff!!

We’ll see how it goes, at least for this week anyway. today I had a tuna nicoise salad for lunch with my dad and I struggled to finish that, although it was like chopping down the amazon rainforest the amount of lettuce leaves that were on my plate, haha! Look at the picture, it’s definitely worth it just need to keep strong. On that note, off to bed to dream of jam doughnuts and chocolate digestives. Kisses x
